I am amazed at the simplistic beauty of the recent Democratic "sweep". I was perfectly awestruck at how the unhappiness of the public about the war in Iraq could be manipulated by the network news, and how the Democrats could subsequently be found in a position to not only jump up and shout, "vote for me!", but then not have to explain why! Indeed, imagine their surprise.
It makes me wonder, if the voting public can be led down this road, where in God's name can this road really lead before the majority wakes up from this propaganda-induced slumber? I, for one, am not so upset that the Republicans lost, but about the lack of honest debate on the Iraq war that led to the utterly "Pied Piper" result". It makes one wonder: is it time that conservatives take the role of "activists"? I don't mean dishonest propaganda, made an art and a science by the skilled left wing of the Democratic Party. I mean honest, but VOCAL and FORCEFUL truthful dissemination. It seems to rise to the level of a survival strategy, not for the GOP, so much as for the conservative majority in this country.
My biggest source of sadness is that even the Fox News channel, who I admire for their balanced analyses, I feel did not do enough to counter-saturate the distorted views of the "mainstream media". Many viewers can almost recite verbatim the body count per month of American soldiers lost, but the vast majority, including myself, cannot list any specific positive infrastructure improvement, humanitarian work, or individual acts of heroism by our heroes in Iraq. Worst of all, for being the so-called "referendum on Iraq", wasn't it a downright INJUSTICE that our soldiers, who we know voted overwhelmingly to finish the job and not "cut and run", could not make their voices heard? Wouldn't it be an idea worth thinking about to now give all of them the opportunity to make themselves heard via an "exit poll", with Fox News, or another network as the forum? I think it would be a service to the country, and especially to our servicemen.
I congratulate the Democratic Party for their dazzling victory. I think it needed to happen, because eventually a party can become complacent and stray from the ideas that won the hearts and minds of the majority in the first place. There should not be any bitterness in this defeat. There should only be an unshakable resolve to win the voters back with good honest Republican challengers in the next election, and to do so using the media, not to manipulate public opinion, but to be a true reflection of what the country demands. We can't afford another media-driven "referendum" about anything. The Democrats won this battle. We need to remind ourselves that we must win the war.
